Aiding Students in the Decision Making Process

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) - Chattanooga is  the designated Safe Schools program of the Hamilton County Schools.  Though the level of services and name have changed since its beginning in 1981, STARS has been consistent in adapting to the needs of the community and supporting the process of aiding students in the decision-making process.

History of STARS

In 1981, Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) – Chattanooga originated

under the governance of Project 714, Inc. as Students Staying Straight (SSS), a

school-based program at Lookout Valley High School.

The name Project 714, Inc. is based on the Old Testament reference of II

Chronicles 7:14. Although not an evangelistic program, the value system and

underpinnings of STARS are Judeo-Christian.

Designed as a prevention and early intervention program of adolescent

substance abuse, program initiatives included:

1) students signing a one-year pledge agreeing to abstain from all use of

illegal drugs including tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs

2) researched-based training

3) support services for students directly affected by substance abuse

4) motivational programs / leadership retreats / multi-school events

Students Staying Straight (SSS) spread each year into additional area schools

and to Nashville in 1984.

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) – Chattanooga, as it is known today, is

the contracted Safe and Drug-Free program of the Hamilton County Schools.

Although the level of services and names have changed through the years,

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) – Chattanooga has been consistent in

adapting to the needs of the community and supporting the process of aiding

students in the decision-making process.

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) – Chattanooga is a school-based

program encouraging students to make healthy choices and to refrain from the

use of alcohol, tobacco, other illicit drugs, and violence.
