National Honor Society
The purpose of the National Honor Society is to elevate students' and schools' academics, leadership, and community engagement.
How to Become a Member of the SDHS National Honor Society (NHS)
Eligibility
A student interested in membership must have completed the equivalent of one semester of enrollment. Membership consideration also requires the following:
- A candidate must be 12th-grade student
- A candidate must have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or higher.
- A candidate must demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Pillars of Membership
- Scholarship
A student must first meet criterion to become a candidate for membership. A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher is required.
- Service
A student must make voluntary contributions to his/her community without compensation. A minimum of 20 volunteer service hours is required.
- Leadership
A student must be resourceful, a good problem solver, and an idea contributor. A student should exhibit leadership in and out of school and while working with or for others.
- Character
A student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; and shows respect for others. The faculty council may review or consider disciplinary records when evaluating this criterion.
Understanding the Obligations of Membership
A student who accepts membership into the SDHS National Honor Society chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with membership. These obligations will include chapter meetings, chapter service projects, and individual service requirements. A member is required to pay $10 NHS dues to help cover chapter expenses. A student will also need to pay an additional $25 fee to purchase a graduation honor stole.

SDHS National Honor Society Chapter Meetings
Meetings will take place in the media center during the school day at the designated club time. Special circumstances may require members to attend a meeting before or after school.
